Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a landmark moment for gender equality and women’s empowerment, the Network of Women Ministers and Parliamentarians (NeWMaP) was officially launched under the patronage of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio.

The launch, facilitated by the Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs (MoGCA), marks a renewed commitment to advancing women’s voices in governance, policy-making, and national development.
With support from Trocaire and Irish Aid , this initiative responds to the growing need for a strong, unified platform where female leaders can collaborate across political lines to champion key socioeconomic and political issues affecting women and girls in Sierra Leone.

A Platform for Change
NeWMaP is more than just a network — it is a strategic coalition of female ministers, deputy ministers, and members of parliament who are committed to promoting gender equality, enhancing women’s leadership, and influencing public policy through collective action.
The reactivation of NeWMaP comes at a critical time, following increased female representation in government after the 2023 general elections — a progress largely attributed to the implementation of gender quota provisions under the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act (2022) .

Mission and Vision
Guided by the motto “United for Women’s Leadership and National Progress,” NeWMaP’s mission is to serve as a national platform for promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment through enhanced leadership in governance, economic empowerment, anti-gender-based violence campaigns, and capacity-building initiatives.
Its vision is a Sierra Leone where women and men enjoy equal rights and opportunities in all spheres of development.
Key Achievements Since Reactivation
Since its reactivation in 2023–2024, NeWMaP has achieved several milestones:
Conducted two major training workshops on networking, mentoring, coaching, and peer support
Officially launched by President Julius Maada Bio
Established and furnished a Secretariat within MoGCA
Recruited two dedicated staff members
Revitalised the defunct Council of Women Councillors
Trained and launched the Network of Female Councillors (NFC) to support district-level implementation
These achievements reflect strong collaboration between the government, civil society, and international partners.
Looking Ahead
The successful launch of NeWMaP sets the stage for meaningful collaboration among female leaders, civil society, and government institutions. With structured mentorship, advocacy, and joint programming, the network aims to influence policies that promote inclusive governance and sustainable development.
CGG and the Ministry of Gender remain committed to supporting NeWMaP as it grows into a powerful force for change, ensuring that women’s voices are not only heard but also shape the future of Sierra Leone.
