Meet Dr. Isata Mahoi

A dynamic leader whose work as Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs has left a remarkable impact on the nation. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Network of Women Ministers and Parliamentarians (NeWMaP), amplifying women’s voices in leadership and policymaking. With a strong passion for development and equality, she has spearheaded groundbreaking reforms that protect women, children, and vulnerable groups. Under her leadership, the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act was passed, ensuring 30% representation of women in governance and outlawing workplace discrimination. She also championed the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, which criminalizes marriage under 18, safeguarding the future of thousands of girls.

Her achievements extend to strengthening child protection through the Child Rights Bill, expanding One Stop Centres for survivors of gender-based violence, and launching the national GBV hotline (116) to provide immediate support. Beyond legislation, Dr. Mahoi has engaged traditional and religious leaders to challenge harmful practices like child marriage and FGM, while also integrating gender into Sierra Leone’s climate change adaptation strategies.
Driven by her passion for development, she continues to advocate for education, youth empowerment, women’s entrepreneurship, and community resilience. Dr. Isata Mahoi’s vision is clear, building a Sierra Leone where every woman, child, and youth has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national progress.
